I'd not really considered this common ground between Foreman and Shawn; food for thought when I see The Fever Saturday and Mr. Sleepy in a couple of weeks. (I'll have that book-length comparative monograph done first thing in the morning.) FWIW I actually quoted Shawn's line about whistling in the dark from your '04 interview when I interviewed Scott Elliott recently; still no news on a new play. Of coure, I wasn't talking to the horse's mouth.

Here's one to cement your thoughts, David, this is all according to someone I know who used to work for Foreman:

Foreman supposedly bowed out of his first on-camera acting role and was replaced by Wallace Shawn. Apparently when they found this out, the staff at the Ontological would try to imagine Foreman in memorable Wallace Shawn roles.

Imagine Foreman as The Sicilian in "The Princess Bride"... or as the T-Rex in "Toy Story".

I AM FROM MATTEL! OVER! OVER! THIS STORY IS OVER!

Or from My Dinner with André:

OKAY. OKAY. READY? HERE IS A PROPOSITION, MY FRIEND ANDRE: WHAT IF, SUPPOSE, I REFUSE TO DISTINGUISH BETWEEN YOUR DELICIOUS CONSUMME AND THE TOTAL DESTRUCTION OF MY MIND?

Okay, according to IMDb, Shawn's first acting role onscreen (as I suspected) was as Diane Keaton's former lover, Jeremiah, the one who "really opened me up sexually," that Allen, upon finally meeting, refers to as "that little homunculus."

I'll never be able to watch that - or for that matter, many of Shawn's roles - the same way again. Though it's a bit hard to imaging Richard as a Ferengi.

"IN-con-CEIVE-able!"
