Out of my reviews this week in TONY, you can take your pick of: egomaniacal, adulterous actors; pedophilic,
self-loathing African-American cokeheads; or snarky office drones riffing on Bush and Iraq. Not a bad week, actually. Each show worth catching on its own merits, each fodder for a sustainable post-show discussion. Is that how I gauge excellence in the theater? Not really, but it’s better than polite silence.
Speaking of post-show discussions…sort of… on January 22 at 7:30, I'm moderating a panel on the problem of so-called Development Hell. The issue has certainly bounced around the blogosphere: are theaters funded so they can indefinitely defer new play production in the name of development? Do literary departments know better than playwrights what makes a good play? Are playwrights overreacting to sensible suggestions? Is there simply not enough money to produce everything? Dramaturg Morgan Jenness, playwright Richard Nelson and playwright/13P cofounder Madeleine George will offer their thoughts. Should be fun.

Isn't Morgan Janness an agent? For directors? Is she also a dramaturg?

She's a literary agent for Abrams Artists, but has worked in the lit. dept of the Public for many years and has worked as a dramaturg.
