Yesterday the New York Drama Critics Circle, of which I am a member, met to toss some laurels on our favorite shows of the 2006-07 season. Best play: The Coast of Utopia. Best American play: Radio Golf. Best musical: Spring Awakening. And a special citation for the fine revival of Journey's End. Not a controversial choice in the bunch, but nothing to be ashamed of either, I suppose. (Unlike the unwillingness to award Caroline, or Change best musical in 2004.) Eric Grode of the New York Sun pulled hard for The Thugs and Dying City got some votes, but the majority opinion went with the well-known, respectable Stoppard behemoth. Check out the Circle's shiny new website, heroically put together by our fearless president, my brilliant colleague, Adam Feldman. It features much information and witty anecdotage about the drunken, surly history of this august body. Also, nifty voting breakdowns here. Looking forward to the awards ceremony next Monday, at the Algonquin. Perhaps the Spring Awakening kids will show up. I bet those cats can par-tay.
What's up with the abstentions from Feldberg, Scheck and Teachout? Is this some sort of procedural manuever?

I guess they didn't feel strongly enough about any one of the potential award-winners. Maybe they thought more than one was worthy. Not a lot of discussion at these things.
