If you never read playwright Jeffrey M. Jones' brilliant essay "Thinking About Writing About Thinking About New Plays," which ran two years ago in American Theatre magazine, he's recently posted it on his blog. I love what Jones has to say about how we need to rethink how we present new, formally difficult plays to audiences. If modern art and new music have commentators, theoreticians, critics and various institutional mechanisms to help people appreciate new plays, why not theater? We're talking vocabulary, common terminology, some agreed upon aesthetic principles. And a sense of coolness & adventure.
Yeah, commentators, theoreticians, critics and various institutional mechanisms are things that theaters don't have. we should value the important of theater, it's the foundation of all what we see in tv's.
