A quick note about some professional appearances over the next few days.
Tomorrow morning I take the train down to Baltimore's Towson University for its first-ever Theatre Artist and Critic Symposium. Joining me will be the courtly and learned Jim O'Quinn, editor of American Theatre, intrepid Internet reviewer Andy Propst, and Moscow-based columnist John Freedman, an American who pointed me to amazing work when I was there last November. John has lived in Moscow since the early ’80s and has witnessed epochal changes in Russia's government and theater. It should be an exciting discussion. We'll mull over the role of the critic in these changing times, especially in the light of recent media contractions. That's a polite way of saying massive shitcanning.
Then on Monday, I head over to the new, downtown 92nd Street Y to moderate a panel on Spring Awakening. I'll talk to the producer Tom Hulce and some of the folks responsible for marketing the show here in NYC and on the road. In case you didn't know, my book Spring Awakening: In the Flesh came out in September. It's really cool and the design is gorgeous.
Lastly, I was in London a couple of weeks ago to oversee the premiere of my one-act opera Fade, which I wrote with composer Stefan Weisman. It went really well. Pictures of my touristy activities here. Review here. And most important, BBC3 radio interview with the composer plus sung excerpts here. Have a listen and let me know what you think…
