Sophomoric twaddle from yours truly.
I. ORPHEUS
It was hard,
Goddamned hard,
Getting Eurydice to follow me out of Hell.
But I did it and our marriage has been downhill ever since.
Now she spreads across the couch, watching her stories,
And when I pass by heading to my office,
She sneers, “Noodling again?”
I mumble, “Just for a bit.”
She used to love my music.
II. OEDIPUS
In retrospect,
Sleeping with one’s mother is not
The worst thing a person could do.
Scooping out my eyeballs was excessive.
There are worse things a person could do.
The eyes I regret most.
Killing my father?
From what I’ve been told,
He was a real bastard.
III. MEDEA
I am pro choice.
Meaning that I chose
To stab those little brats.
Do you remember their names? No?
No one does.
Grandfather says that I was really killing myself,
Or Jason’s love, or my childhood, or some nonsense.
I sit by the phone, I check the mail, I wait.
The house is so quiet.
